Maine is currently contemplating cutting ties with ISO-New England and the Nepool grid. In a recent article by Tom Bell in the Portland Press Herald, many companies in Maine are supporting the cut. Maine currently pays some of the highest electricity rates in the entire country with residential rates reaching as high as 17 cents/kwh. However, while the rest of Maine is waging war with ISO-NE, the Katahdin Region of Maine is utilizing its ingenuity to create opportunities. FSC's President and CEO, Bruce D. McLean, has assembled a team of energy experts to create New England's first alternative energy park aptly named the Katahdin Energy Commons. Being at the center of Maine's "wood-basket", the Katahdin Energy Commons is being designed to utilize the region's bio-resources to create a synergistic cogeneration system where one operation's waste is another operation's fuel source.
